We love new experiences and can't resist an order of mussels. So upon reading through the menu online we were excited to spend our Friday date night at Catalunya We should have known better. Upon walking up to the restaurant and realizing that not a single person was dining at 7:30pm on a Friday night. It was almost like walking into the twilight zone. When we asked where everybody was the response was bizarre. Something along the lines of it is a summer night and people are with their families grilling out. We began by ordering a Wisconsin Amber off of their menu and they were out of stock. So then when we went on to order the mussels, realizing that it was made with Wisconsin Amber the waiter did not understand our query as to if it's still available. He was just going to substitute a Hinterland IPA and not let us know. We went ahead with the order and changed up our beer, but were highly disappointed with the poor tasting small mussels. There was no way we were going to stick around for a sub par entree with a hefty price tag. We closed our bill and went down the street to a very crowded restaurant with great food. The lack of patrons at Catalunya had nothing to do with a beautiful night and everything to do with a poor restaurant.

First experience, dinner a couple months ago, was blah...food wasn't horrible, but wasn't great either. Service was slow, unenthusiastic, and apathetic. But I like to give new restaurants at least a second shot before making a firm opinion. Brunch today was extremely disappointing. I ordered the special "pancakes with ricotta and raspberries with bacon." When it arrived and I sliced my fork into it, the fork disappeared into a pile of MUSHY BATTER like goo. It tasted like uncooked pancake batter with raspberries. YUK! So when I asked if this is what it was supposed to be like and the waitress replied "Yes," I politely said that I wasn't implying the kitchen prepared it incorrectly, but that it wasn't something I could eat. She took it away and ignored us for the rest of our brunch...I shared my husband's "Irish Breakfast"...generic eggs, sausage, and bacon with toast and we never got any refills on water or coffee (probably because she was ignorning us, as there was only one other table in the entire dining room) The bill INCLUDED the uneaten "pancake" and ultimately we left feeling like our business wasnt wanted or important. I enjoy leaving positive reviews for places, as I am in the service industry myself, but after having been to Catalunya twice and having two negative experiences, I feel that it is fair to give them one star.

I can't say enough about Catalunya. The atmosphere is very nice, the service was stellar, and the food was divine.

My wife and I live in Sheboygan Falls and finally tried Catalunya for the fist time today July 3rd 2013. Oh my, where to start. First we arrived at 1:15 and were the only customers there. The waiter was a teenager and knew nothing about the menu or the food he was serving us. The food was strange and not good at all. I was shocked that a restaurant could screw up hamburgers and soup so bad we had to ask what kind of meat they were made of. As I was informed their bacon cheeseburgers have some slivers of bacon mixed in the meat while it is raw and then becomes undetectable when it is served. My wife's "Catalunya burger" was missing ingredients listed on the menu and had to be served on the side. The "pork stew" contained a half oz. of pork at best, it was mostly beans and broth. Even the ice tea tasted days old. I sent the tea back and assumed it would be removed from our bill but it wasn't. It turns out the waiter didn't know how to remove it and needed to get the manager. We told him about our experience but got the standard "I'm sorry" with no desire to remove the items from our bill, no discount on future visits or anything. Needless to say we will never return and would never recommend Catalunya for any consideration.

I was hoping to give Catalunya a 4 star review, as our waiter was very friendly & honest (but not over-the-top as another waiter there seemed to be), the ambiance was nice (if fairly empty for 7PM on a Friday night), and the food was ambitious. Ambition is something to be praised, particularly in a small town like Sheboygan falls.. and the food wasn't *bad* - per se... it just wasn't anything to write home about. While "Eh, I've experienced better" is yelp's 2 star equivalent (and true), it would seem a disservice to this 1 year old restaurant to give it two stars - if for no other reason than that it exists in a place where ambitious restaurants are somewhat lacking. So, the review: I ordered 3 appetizers for our group. 1. Guacamole 'Catalan' - it comes w/spicy bean dip - which we all loved... The guac itself is prepared table side, which is a neat aspect considering (again) that we are in a small town in WI. However, the anchovy flavor (which was added b/c the man preparing it said it made it truly Spanish) overwhelmed the delicacy of the avocado. None of us really liked this... though you can't blame the restaurant for trying. 2. Crostini platter - a) white cheese topped w/olive tapenade - by far my favorite. If we go back, I will get a platter of just this one. It's really delicious b) "two-tomato 'jam' with basque sheeps milk" - this was sweet (sweet tomato jam then) and not much else going on, not something I'd order again. c) sauteed mushrooms - very greasy (not surprisingly) so not worth while in my book. 3) Mussels with Chorizo - kind of an odd one but we love mussels... and chorizo can be great, so why not? There could decidedly have been more chorizo, and tomato for that matter... I tasted no saffron (not that that's a disappointment, just that it's advertised) - also this comes w/clams as well.. It was just ok. Then onto the main courses: 1. my husband got ricotta gnocchi (never heard of that before) it was served in a tomato sauce and was light. He really enjoyed it, and my friend and I found it fine. 2. my friend got the salmon in romesco sauce - I didn't taste it (the sauce humorously looked like sriracha but I'm guessing didn't taste like it). I suppose it, also, was OK, as she and my husband seemed to think so. 3. For my dish, I ordered the rainbow trout navarro - I mean listen to this description: "Bacon and garlic stuffed trout wrapped in Spanish ham, served with asparagus, corn, and zucchini ratatouille" That being said, it was a whole fish, head, scales n all - yup. So it being 'wrapped' in Spanish ham was pretty pointless as it just dried out the ham, and I mean... who wants ham wrapped around a fish that's looking at you?? The ham thus did nothing for the taste of the dish itself, as the meat was, you know, *inside* the fish. The inside of the fish where the garlic (and perhaps some bacon) was, was tasty. It was also oily, but I got a few decent bites from it... I really think they should let you know this is an entire fish with white, dead eyeballs coming at you. Also, I didn't have any asparagus or zucchini to speak of, but strips of onion and bellpepper with the corn. We finished with a lemon sorbet with fresh blueberries. For me - I thought it was a nice, light ending to the meal. For my companions, it was way too tart. Oh well! At least that was funny. You win some, you lose some, and some are just so-so. Finally - yes it can get pricey, and for the quality - I'm not sure it's worth it just yet. But, some of the salads sounds interesting, so maybe we'll go back for that.

OK, I've read the other reviews and some seem rather harsh. I love a good restaurant like the next gal and I am also a real "Foodie." So, given that, I have my own take. Upon entering the Catalunya, we were pleased with the remodel of the space from the old restaurant. Although scant of seating, the bar was beautiful and, with time, I would imagine more seating will come. We enjoyed our drinks at the far end of the bar area where we sat in the covered chairs which were very comfortable. I ordered a margarita and it was delicious. The crowd was light so we were seated in the dining room when we requested to be and were at a large round table by the front windows. I sat with my back to the fully exposed windows. I would like to have a little more privacy. The windows need some drop down plantation blinds or something. We ordered the Calamari which was just okay. The aioli sauce was tasty but not enough Calamari and the pieces were very small almost crumbs. Presentation was nice. A small amount of bread was also served. In my opinion, restaurants serve way too much bread prior to dinner. This was a perfect amount for 4 people. We asked for water with lemon. It seemed totally inappropriate to bring the lemon to the table on a napkin and set it down. Where was the plate? Hummmm. I made comment to dining guests about how odd that was. I ordered the Payella ($25). It came piping hot in a cast iron pan which was nice. The dish had ample amounts of seafood, chicken, and sausage. Like one of the other reviews, I also thought it was way too oily. I have made Payella before and I am not sure why their's was so oily. Flavor was good but they really needed to scrub their clams and mussels! Scares me to think they may not have even rinsed them off. They were VERY sandy. My husband had the Beef Short Ribs. The presentation was nice, it was served hot, and as he shared with me, I thought delicious ($21). We did not have dessert. In fact, I don't believe we were asked if we wanted any but I could have missed that. Our waiter seemed very polite and not over the top, he was dressed nicely and seemed to want to be there. Clearly this is a new restaurant that needs a little "tweaking" to give it that finer dining feeling because the pricing is up there. The decor seems appropriate for the area. Not sure if they have any advertisement on Hwys. 23 or 57 but if they want to really make a go of it, they need to get there billboard up soon. This is a remote location and if I didn't live within 25 minutes, I would not know about this restaurant. I will give this restaurant another chance. I hope they make it. They seem to be on the right track. Make some changes SOON though. It is a tough business and you have to get it right immediately and be consistent. Word of mouth can be your best advertisement or your worst enemy. Nancy B.

I thought that this was a great restaurant. The restaurant is decorated in victorian transitional and the staff were clean and dressed in professional black uniforms. I ate the seafood soup special and it was very delicious. My mom, who is from sea port town in Jamaica, enjoyed the the sea food special as well. The owner, very warm and courteous woman, came to our table twice to explain to foods and to see how we enjoyed our meals. The bath room was very clean an dnicely decorated as well. I will definitely visit this restuarant the next time we visit Sheyboygin falls.

We made a reservation for 6:30pm on a Friday night. Arrived at 6:32pm and was told it would be a 5 minute wait. They told us to sit at the bar and have a drink. 35 minutes later we were asked to order out appetizers at the bar since it would be a little bit. When I asked how much longer since we preferred to eat our food at the table the strange young boy with the wide rule notebook who ran around acting like he owned the place told us oh "5 minutes or 10 minutes, actually no more than 7 minutes" since this wasn't very much time we chose to wait and order at the table. About 20 minutes later we were finally seated. At this time we placed our full orders of appetizers and entrees assuming another long wait since we had just waited one hour to be seated. The appetizers(soup and guacamole) came rather promptly at that point and were good. Nothing spectacular but good, minus the fact that they dumped the toasted bread that comes with the guac all over the floor and table and proceeded to tell us they would replace it and never did. When I finally asked they threw two untoasted slices of bread on the table. Another 70 minutes went by, in which 40 of those minutes we sat with empty glasses and not one nod of attention by a waitress or the owner whom appeared to be walking around taking to the couple tables that were occupied. My "sangria" if one can call it that was disgusting. The young bartender basically mixed some red wine with orange juice and then 10 minutes later I was told they were missing the main ingredients LOL. Well anyways 70 minutes and no entrees still. At this point it's 8:45 and we had a 6:30 reservation! So in the end we finally asked for the food to go. The paella was really oily, far to oily for paella. The pork and chicken were just OK...let's just say that our dog had a wonderful dinner. Places like this get chewed up and spit out in Chicago..but I guess in Sheboygan Falls you can suffice on poor service and medicore food.

We had a wonderful meal. Local sourcing and a seasonal menu make this a worthwhile experience. The trout wrapped and suffed with bacon and spanish ham was complemented with a great pear salad. Mussels were just right too.

I have been here 3-4 times and has been wonderful each time. The scallop appetizer is perfect. Also love their new squash soup with pumpkin seeds and romesco sauce, and even though I am not a vegetarian, their veggie paella is delicious. My only complaint is the servers were constantly trying to clear our plates with food still on them and with fork in hand! I can understand once, but this happened 3 times (different servers) in a very short amount of time. otherwise service is very good. great addition to Sheboygan Falls.
